Together at Christmas
Estranged from family and friends, Christmas can be a lonely time for some in the Bankside area. So remind them that somebody cares by getting involved in our annual winter appeal and help us continue to make a difference to the lives of local homeless, vulnerably housed and elderly people.
Last year, our Together at Christmas collection was our most successful campaign to date. With 75 Bankside businesses contributing to the initiative, we managed to donate 4700 gifts to over 1,600 people supported by 28 local charities and community groups.
This December, we want to make our Together at Christmas campaign even bigger and better, so we’ve decided to join forces with neighbouring BID, We Are Waterloo.
If you or your business would like to take part in Together at Christmas 2017, here are the various ways you can get involved:
1. Host a collection box
Encourage your colleagues to donate unwrapped gifts by hosting a collection box in your office. Why not host more than one box and see which team can donate the most? Our festively wrapped boxes are 45x45x45cm in size, so can easily fit into your office. Boxes will be delivered straight to your office in early November and collected between 4-6 December. This allows the charities to receive the gifts in time for their own Christmas celebrations with service users.
We've now delivered the collection boxes to participating boxes, but it's not too late for your business to get involved: rn [at] betterbankside.co.uk (subject: Host%20a%20collection%20box) (register your interest to host a collection box here).
For local residents or organisations not hosting a collection box, each year we have a number of public collection points which you can bring your gifts to:
- Better Bankside Community Space, 18 Great Guildford Street
- Borough Market (in the information office)
- Forster Communications, 49 Southwark Street
- Hilton London Bankside, 2-8 Great Suffolk Street
- Mercure London Bridge, 71-79 Southwark Street
- The Bridge, 73-81 Southwark Bridge Road
- The Office Group, 201 Borough High Street

2. Donate gifts
What kind of gifts are needed? It’s very simple, we have three set categories:
• New warm clothing (predominately for men): underwear, warm socks, t-shirts, gloves, hats, joggers, jeans and footwear (size 9-10)
• Toiletries: disposable razors, shaving foam, deodorant, towels; shower gel, moisturisers
• Festive non-perishable food: luxury treats, boxes of chocolates and biscuits, Christmas puddings
Please avoid donating second hand clothes, tins or cans of food and alcohol. Remember these are special gifts, rather than charity shop donations!

3. Hold an in-house gift wrapping session
If you’re hosting a collection box, why not use this as an opportunity to bring your colleagues together and host a fun wrapping session. Full guidance will be provided by Better Bankside about what’s involved. All in-house wrapping sessions must be completed in early December so that we can collect your gifts between 4-6 December to get them ready for delivery. This allows the charities to receive the gifts in time for their own Christmas celebrations with service users.

4. Sign up to Better Bankside’s public gift wrapping sessions
Every year we hold a number of public gift wrapping sessions to help wrap and make the donated items into parcels before donating them. These sessions will be held in the first week of December so that the charities have the gifts in time for their Christmas celebrations. Any time you can volunteer to help is much appreciated.
Dates and times:
4 December - 1pm-4.30pm
5 December - 10am-12.30pm, 1pm-4.30pm or 5pm-7pm
6 December - 10am-12.30pm or 1pm-4.30pm
All wrapping sessions take place at St. Mungo's, 7 Kings Bench St, SE1 OQX. You can attend for as long as you like during one of our wrapping sessions, but we ask all volunteers to arrive on the hour for a briefing.
RN [at] betterbankside.co.uk (subject: T%40C%3A%20attend%20a%20public%20gift%20wrapping%20session) (Register you interest to attend a public gift wrapping session here) - Just let us know the date and session you plan to attend, if you're coming as an individual, or if you're coming with colleagues, how many people to expect.
