Be a Zero Food Waste Hero

Bankside and You Opportunity
Did you know we waste way too much food? Help Plan Zheroes get surplus food to charities that are feeding people in need.

Why Get Involved

Did you know we waste way too much food? In the UK, it’s about 10 million tonnes per year and in many cases, this food is perfectly good to eat.

Plan Zheroes tackles the issues of food waste and food poverty by inspiring businesses to donate their surplus food to charities that are feeding people in need rather than sending it to landfill. They run a twice-weekly food collection at Borough Market and also operate an online platform where companies can post their donations of surplus food.

Volunteer roles include

  • Collect surplus foodstuffs from Borough Market Traders
  • Sort the foodstuffs for ease of collection by local charities
  • Welcome and where necessary help the charities to pack up and take away the foodstuffs
  • Use the Plan Zheroes cargo bike or a Better Bankside Brompton bike to help deliver food to charities unable to come to the collection point

To make sure the food reaches as many charities as possible, the project uses Plan Zheroes' electrically assisted cargo bike with the option to also use a Better Bankside Brompton bike. Volunteers for this should be confident on the road, though there are no formal requirements such as a driving licence. If you would like to be a cycling volunteer, we will provide a short training session with a cycling instructor to ensure you know how to ride safely and to give you an opportunity to get used to driving the bikes.
