One Day ... Work Experience Project
This project aims to provide local young people with work experience in local businesses. The project works both in schools and more informal youth settings like adventure playgrounds and youth clubs. We focus on single workplace exposure days and short, targeted training sessions in companies, offering young people the chance to explore the wide variety of different careers open to them.

One Day 2008
The project was piloted in 2008 with extremely successful results. Funded by SOWF, Land Securities and London Borough of Southwark and working with a range of different Better Bankside companies, it was a real collaborative effort. Two young people from a local youth club were given a work placement with Better Bankside and asked to organise an event at the end of Septemebr. To help them do this, we asked local businesses to offer training sessions in their specialist areas, to give our young people the event management skills they would need. The following companies took part in 2008 and we owe them a big debt of thanks:
  • Iris PR
  • Mediamixer
  • HSBC
  • Tate Britain
  • Tate Modern
  • Vinopolis
  • IPC Media

Click here to meet our young people and here to find out more about their fantastic event.

2008 also saw the successful completion of three one day workplace exposure visits, working with local schools St Saviour's and St Olaves Secondary and Charles Dickens Primary. Pupils from St Saviour's and St Olave's took part in two days, one focusing on the building and construction industry and another on the catering trade. Charles Dickens Primary School pupils spent the day learning about online publishing and had the chance to create their very own email newsletter.
The days were a great success, giving the young people a practical, tangible sense of the range of careers open to them in a particular industry. We couldn't have done it without the help of the companies who hosted the young people during the day, generously giving their time and expertise:
  • Allies and Morrison
  • Waterman Group Plc
  • Land Securities
  • Bovis
  • Roast Restaurant
  • Vinopolis
  • IPC Media

One Day 2009
Following this successful pilot, the project needs local employees to offer a few hours of their expertise to a small group of young people and give them an insight into the world of work. If you’re keen to inspire (and prepared to be inspired yourself!) get in touch. Rachel Fitzgerald, rf@betterbankside.co.uk, 020 7928 3998
