Southwark Theatres Education Partnership
Southwark Theatres Education Partnership (STEP) is a borough-wide partnership linking the Southwark theatre community and education sector. STEP aims to work closely with all of Southwark’s schools, theatres and performing arts organisations to provide creative approaches to learning and develop innovative projects which stimulate children and young people’s personal development and contribute to their educational attainment and motivation.

The work that STEP does is varied and wide ranging, from projects with pupil referral units, to work with the youngest children in Early Years Centres. The STEP Festival is the focal point of each year's work, a celebration of theatre for young people in Southwark, which brings together organisations, large and small, to 'make the invisible visible' and promote the vast range of imaginative and creative education work that the theatres and performing arts organisations deliver throughout the borough. The exciting two week programme provides young people in Southwark with the chance to participate in theatre and drama in all its forms. The STEP Festival 2008 will take place from 10th – 21st November.

Just three weeks ago, one of STEP’s drama projects culminated in an impressive performance at the Scoop at More London. The project brought together Joseph Lancaster, Ivydale, Crampton and John Ruskin Primary schools alongside Southwark College students to tell the story of Petite Rouge, the Cajun retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. The young people involved explored the themes of making choices, freedom and the individual, responsibility and trust and the different routes we choose to take in life. One of the groups was also set the task of providing the percussion for the entire piece on African drums. The final performance was a highly energetic, ensemble piece involving physical theatre, song, dance and percussion.
