This December, Blackfriars Settlement's Older People's Services have four opportunities to help combat elderly loneliness

The Older People's services at Blackfriars Settlement aims to combat elderly loneliness and help contribute to a better quality of life for older people who are marginalised from the wider community. The organisation sets out to achieve this by running a variety of initiatives throughout the calendar year from weekly art and craft clubs to befriending projects.

The festive season is always an excellent time to get involved with volunteer work, especially when support is most needed. This December, Blackfriars Settlement have three projects they currently need volunteers for. Whether you're able to donate your time as an individual or want to gather your colleagues together for an afternoon, there's plenty of scope to get involved.

From preparing Christmas lunch, running afternoon quizzes to simply having a chat with an older person, take a look at the volunteer opportunities below:

  • Support the visually impaired with their Christmas Shopping

Friday 2 December, 9am - 4:30pm
Blackfriars Settlement are looking for a group of volunteers (up to 14 people) to help their visibly impaired group do their Christmas Shopping. This is a thoroughly enjoyable trip where you will buddy up with someone from the group, help them with their shopping and make a new friend along the way. Departing from Blackfriars Settlement and going to a Poll Hill shopping centre.

  • Elderly Christmas Lunch

Thursday 15 December
Blackfriars Settlement will be hosting a special Christmas Lunch for all their older patrons (approx 100 people) and need volunteers to help prepare the meal, assist with afternoon entertainment or simply be a helping hand to help the day run smoothly. Any donations to help cover the cost of the meal, specific food donations (eg a Christmas turkey) or raffle prizes would also be greatly appreciated).

  • Visually Impaired Christmas Lunch

Friday 16 December

Blackfriars Settlement will be hosting a special Christmas Lunch for all their visually impaired patrons (approx 25 people) and need volunteers to help prepare the meal, assist with afternoon entertainment or simply be a helping hand to help the day run smoothly. Any donations to help cover the cost of the meal, specific food donations (eg a Christmas turkey) or raffle prizes would also be greatly appreciated).

  • Christmas Eve & Christmas Day

Whether you can donate a few hours of your time or half a day, this is an opportunity to help people celebrate Christmas who otherwise wouldn't have one. There's a variety of ways to get involved from dinner prep, organising activities, to simply creating a friendly environment for an isolated older person. Blackfriars Settlement also need drivers on Christmas Day to bring the guests to the venue for 12pm and then take them home at 5pm.
