Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day is a day when traditionally people prepare themselves for the disciplines of the Lenten fast! Following previous years’ fantastic Pancake Day Races, Better Bankside is organising another race inside Borough Market’s Jubilee Market, Bankside SE1. Members of the Bankside business community will be showing off their pancake-tossing skills at the Better Bankside Pancake Day Race. The event will take place on Tuesday February 12th 2013 from 12noon – 2.00pm in Borough Market, with the races taking place at 12.30pm.

The simple relay race is open to a maximum of twenty-five teams from local businesses, each team consisting of four members. Five heats plus a winners' race run inside Borough Market's Jubilee Market will establish Bankside's best pancake tossers. The winning team will receive the Pancake Day Trophy along with a full Borough Market Kitchen Kit, which consists of Oven Glove, Apron, tea towel and cool bag. All participants will receive a Borough Market bag for taking part, thanks to the generous partnership with Borough Market.

To sign your team up - your business needs to be either a Better Bankside levy-paying partner or a Business Club member (we will be able to let you know whether you are or not) you must have a team of four people. Email le@betterbankside.co.uk with the following information: Name of team, Company name, Name of team leader, Contact details of team leader

Better Bankside suggests a £20 donation per team (although donations of any size are welcome), which will go to Paintings in Hospitals, a local charity (no.1065963) that lends original works of art to hospitals, hospices and other healthcare facilities throughout the UK. Information for participating teams Before the day, you will be sent a list of the rules, circulate to team members and get practising! On the day itself, pancakes and pans will be provided. Remember to wear suitable shoes for running in and to bring your £20 entry fee in cash to be handed to Paintings in Hospitals at registration.

The Dean of Southwark Cathedral will begin the race and all are welcome to come along, support their teams and enjoy the live music.

For spectators and participants Borough Market trader Baxter’s and The Refectory at the Cathedral will be selling pancakes with a variety of toppings: cinnamon, lemon, nutella, fruit salad and banana. Other traders from Borough Market will be there on the day providing a host of sweet treats and the market’s Demonstration Kitchen with resident chef Hayley Edwards will be there to show you how to create a range of delicious pancake fillings from the Market’s produce.
