Each individual in Bankside can easily do their bit in helping to achieve these targets. This section will provide you with some easy ideas and links to help you plan your sustainable journeys.

Walking

pollution
A brisk walk of 2 miles should take about 30 minutes. This covers your daily recommended exercise and you can loose approx 100 calories per mile. Regular walking can reduce the risk of many health problems such as coronary heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure, anxiety and stress. Why not incorporate walking as part of your daily commute to work, or to meetings? For an interactive walking map for the Bankside please click here for the Bankside Interactive Map.

Cycling

health
A moderate half-hour ride burns 8 calories a minute, which is the equivalent of 11kg of fat in a year if you cycle that distance regularly. Bankside are working to increase the number of cycle parking spaces in 2007-2008. Plans are being made to install another 50 public spaces. Why not cycle to work? Or use a cycle to get to meetings? If your company does not have a pool bike, please visit the Pool Bikes for Businesses guide to get details on how your company could set up a scheme. Visit the Travel Links Cycling page for more information or see the Bankside Interactive Map for locations of cycle parking in Bankside.

Bus

healthThere are 18 bus routes that service the Bankside area. Often they can be quicker then using the tube. Visit the Travel Links Buses page for more information or see the Bankside Interactive Map

River

healthThere is one pier in the Bankside area: Bankside pier and two just outside the area at London Bridge and Blackfriars. Many operators offer 1/3 off normal advertised adult and child fares on production of a valid Travelcard or Oyster card loaded with a valid Travelcard when purchasing a ticket. Oyster cards with pre-pay are not accepted. Visit the Travel Links River Services page for more information.

Tube and Train

health
People working and living in the Bankside area have access to a host of train and tube stations. These stations are:
  • Southwark (Jubilee Line)
  • London Bridge (Northern and Jubilee Lines, National Rail)
  • Borough (Northern Line)
  • Blackfriars (Circle and District Lines)
  • Mansion House (Circle and District Lines)
  • Cannon Street (Circle and District Lines, National Rail)
  • Monument (Circle and District Line)
  • Waterloo (Bakerloo, Northern, Jubilee, Waterloo & City, National Rail)
  • Waterloo East (National Rail)
Why not incorporate walking and / or cycling as part of your tube journey? By terminating your journey one stop earlier and walking the rest of the distance into work or meetings, you could add valuable minutes to your 30 minutes a day goal. See the Travel Links General Tube and Rail pages for more information including the TfL Journey planner, where you can include walking in your public transport trips.
