Better Bankside’s Winter Service Plan

Better Bankside received its first 2-5 day Summary Forecast of the winter from Southwark Council on Thursday 26th January, alerting us to below zero Road Surface Temperatures (RSTs) over that weekend with the risk of hoar frost and ice in wet areas and of snow on Sunday 29, Monday 30 and Tuesday 31 January. The risk of snow was lowered by Sunday but the risk of freezing conditions remained.
In response to the ice and frost warnings Better Bankside’s cleaning team started its salt treatment regime on Friday 27th January, focusing on the prime footways through the BID, along Borough High Street, Southwark Street, Southwark Bridge Road and Union Street. The salting was completed within 2 hours.
Further salting will take place on Friday 3rd / Saturday 4th February if the current 2-5 day Forecast (01/02/2012 to 05/02/2012) is confirmed with predictions of snow over the weekend. The routes will include the Borough Market area and less well used streets such as Park Street, Sumner Street, Great Guildford Street and Great Suffolk Street .
