Blackfriars Station and Bridge
River Walk, Thames Path update
Until April 2012
To allow construction work on the southern entrance, the Thames Path will close at night time only, until April this year. The path will be closed from 10.30pm until 5.00am, while the station itself is closed. The river walk will also close on the following weekends:
- 11 and 12 Feb
- 18 and 19 Feb
- 25 and 26 Feb
- 10 and 11 March
The signed diversionary route used during the previous closure of the path will be in place.
Thames Water
Thames Water will carry out work on the South Bank for a few days in February. The exact date for the activity will be fixed closer to the time. This work will have no impact on local water supplies.
Transport for London
During February, Transport for London will continue to remodel and realign the road network around the new Blackfriars station entrance on the North Bank. This will ensure the street network is pedestrian-friendly when the new station reopens.
Track and signalling work
The Rail Systems team will re-align track between City Thameslink and Elephant and Castle station. This work will involve the use of a welder and grinders and will be carried out from 23 January for three weeks until 17 February. Works will take place in the vicinity of Quadrant House from 1 – 10 February during week nights.
On Saturday 4 February signal posts will be erected on Blackfriars station platforms. This activity will involve the use of works trains and noise levels are anticipated to be low.
The weekend of 25 and 26 February a signal gantry will be put in place at the north end of the bridge. This activity is also not anticipated to generate much noise.
Hopton Street, Constructing new south station entrance
Duration: Ongoing until mid 2012
The new station entrance on the South Bank is now open. Around 80% of the station is now complete, so there will be a reduction in the level of works that continue to take place in 2012.
- Works inside the newly enclosed station building will take place 24 hours (access via Invicta Plaza, not Hopton Street).
- Works on the western side of the bridge will continue. Some of these works will need to take place after hours for safety reasons.
- Some external finishing works to the entrance building will take place during normal working hours.
- A tower crane will continue to operate in Hopton Street after hours; however, deliveries in Hopton Street will only take place during normal working hours.
Deliveries to Site
Duration: Ongoing until further notice
Where possible, major deliveries of construction materials will be made by river barge from now on; these deliveries are scheduled to take place on a 24 hour basis.
Occasionally deliveries will have to be made by road vehicles in Hopton Street or using the ramp leading up to the railway at 242 Blackfriars Road. Deliveries in the Hopton Street area will be made from 08.00 – 18.00 weekdays and 08.00 – 13.00 Saturdays.
Steelwork RepairsDuration: Ongoing for around 2 years
We will continue with steelwork repairs and painting activity on Blackfriars Railway Bridge in January. Works in this area will include grit-blasting and rivet removal. Works will take place across the entire bridge during normal working hours, although some work will need to place after hours, for safety reasons.
Refurbishing work
Duration: Ongoing for around 2 years
During February , we will continue to reconstruct the stone piers (west and east) that support the bridge. The east side masonry works should be complete by the end of the month. These works will take place on a 24 hour basis.
Grit-blasting activity is scheduled to take place on the bridge for the next few months and sound protection measures will be used to screen noise from residents.
In February we will be undertaking other low impact work, this will include replacing the bridge façade and painting the structure. Some materials will be delivered at night by barge. Some very low impact works will take place after hours.
Installing the New Station Roof
Duration: Ongoing for around 2 years
During February, we will carry out infill steel welding and roof cladding works along the length of bridge. Some works will take place after hours for safety reasons when the trains are not running. Roof cladding works are expected to continue until late spring 2012.
This month we will also carry out painting preparation works on days and weekends. We will also cut and assemble roof sheets this month; this work is expected to continue 24 hours a day.

Blackfriars (road) Bridge, Closure of footway on eastern side
Duration: Ongoing for around 2 years
The
footway on the eastern (downstream) side of Blackfriars Bridge is now
