St Thomas Street Works
St Thomas Street, Project introduction
Duration to June 2012
Works are taking place to improve the streetscene along St Thomas Street, between Stainer Street and Borough High Street. Extensive consultation has taken place on a set of designs that seek to achieve the following objectives
- To create a better connection between the station and the hospital and university to the south
- To promote the safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists through the area by improving crossings and movement over St Thomas Street
- To improve the look and feel of St Thomas Street by investing in high quality paving materials and introducing street trees
- To pedestrianise Joiner Street, the short section of highway which runs between St Thomas Street and London Bridge station. Access for emergency vehicles will be retained through use of a controlled rising bollard
Blu-3, on behalf of Sellar Properties, the developers of the Shard, has been appointed to carry out improvements to the footway and carriageway along St Thomas Street, from Borough High Street to the junction with Stainer Street.
These works will provide 2,200 square metres of new carriageway surface and 800 square metres of new paved footway surface and will create a better connectivity between London Bridge station and the hospital and university to the South. It will also promote safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists through the area by improving crossings and improve the street environment by investing in high quality paving materials and introducing trees.
The work is due to be carried out in phases designed to mitigate disruption and complete the work quickly. Further details of works are given below.

St Thomas Street, Footpath improvements
November 2011 - June 2012
Pavement improvements are now well underway with the target of completing as much of the improvements before the Olympics this summer.
These works include upgrading the pavement finishes along the eastern section of St Thomas Street to new high quality Yorkstone paving and relocating the existing pedestrian crossing at the junction with Joiner Street closer to the crossroads. This will reduce the bottleneck and pedestrian congestion that currently exists at this busy junction.
Starting from the junction with Borough High Street, the pavement works will be phased to minimise disruption to local businesses and residents. Only short sections of the pavement will be taken over by our contractors at any one time. The works area will be fully enclosed and raised walkways will be installed around the work areas to ensure safe access and flow of pedestrians is maintained.
Full time supervision will be in place for the works, based out of The Shard development.
Contact names and numbers for the will be clearly displayed on the hoardings, should there be any concerns with how the works are progressing or impacting on day to day life. Working hours will be:
- 07:00 – 23:00 Monday to Friday
- 08:00 – 16:00 Saturday
- It may be necessary to work 08:00 – 16:00 on Sundays
Until the completion of the scheme, the westbound carriageway on St Thomas Street will be closed from Borough High Street to Stainer Street. Traffic will be diverted via Borough High Street and Tooley Street. Clear diversion signs will be in place during works.

St Thomas Street, Footbridge and s106 improvements
Progress has been made to the public realm at London Bridge Quarter with the removal of the footbridge and stairs linking London Bridge Station and Guy’s Hospital. The improvements to the public realm will include the upgrading of St Thomas Street and improvement of access to Guy’s Hospital via Great Maze Pond. As part of these plans, access from the station concourse level down to St Thomas Street will be vastly improved with the installation of modern escalators and a lift, which will be completed by June 2012.
For these works to progress the current temporary footbridge and stairs from London Bridge Station to Guy’s Hospital had to be removed over the 2011 seasonal break. A road closure was in operation to allow safe removal of the bridge using a mobile crane. As the footbridge was made up of three spans, the biggest over St Thomas Street at 28.5 metres, it was lifted down to the ground in three pieces, then carefully separated at ground level and removed.
