22nd May - Sustainable Buildings Conference |
It is now accepted that old buildings, creatively re-used, can be the 'engine' for major pieces of urban regeneration. Bankside's own Tate Modern is a fine example. In light of climate change, there is now a need to consider whether this re-use can be accomplished in a sustainable and carbon-friendly manner. However there is currently little debate on this topic, with the focus given primarily to the sustainability of new build, particularly in the housing sector.
A major conference in Bankside on 22nd May seeks to redress the balance. It takes place at another fine local example of re-use - the magnificient Menier Chocolate Factory on Southwark Street. The event features an exciting array of speakers from all sectors, including Anne Power of the London School of Economics, David Drewe of English Heritage, Anthony Alexander of Alan Baxter & Associates, David Ireland of the Empty Homes Agency and Marina Pacheco from Bankside's own Campaign for the Protection of Rural England.
