Bankside Bikefest - 'an outstanding success' |
|
Better Bankside’s first-ever ‘Bikefest’ took place during September and October. It was designed to celebrate European Mobility Week (15 th to 22 nd September) and to promote the Bankside area-wide Travel Plan, which is seeking a 50% increase in the number of walking and cycling journeys made by local employees. The initiative was funded by Southwark Council, and delivered by Southwark Cyclists. It featured:
Four public sessions at major local landmarks, including:
- ‘Dr Bike’ basic service
- Folding Bike roadshow
- Advice on bicycle security
Six company-specific sessions (with the same ingredients) at:
- Allies & Morrison
- Financial Times
- Health & Safety Executive
- HSBC
- IPC Media
- Ofcom
One further session – with Ansbacher Bank – will happen shortly. Five ‘After Worker’ bike rides on Thursdays
- Putney
- The Border Patrol – around Southwark’s 17m border
- Woolwich Ferry
- ‘The Ghosts of South London’
- Greenwich & beyond
The uptake at the public and company sessions was excellent, with more than 100 bikes serviced by the mechanics and a high level of interest in the four folding bikes on display.
Attendance at the bike rides by businesspeople was modest, although those who did attend enjoyed the experience.
