Bankside Development Update Oct 07
At Better Bankside we are aware at how fast the area is changing and it can often be difficult to keep up to speed with planning proposals, permissions granted and new businesses moving into the area For this reason, every quarter we will include a brief update on the Bankside developments provided by Bankside Residents' Forum.

Beetham Tower ( 1 Blackfriars Road)
Proposal:51-storey tower to include residential flats, luxury 260 room hotel run by Dubai based Jumeriah, conference rooms, leisure facilities and parking spaces. Ground floor shops, cafes, restaurants and public viewing deck.
Developer: Beetham
Architect: Ian Simpson
Current Status: Planning Committee approved the application in July 2007. Recently the Developer announced the height of the tower will be reduced in a bid to avoid a lengthy planning inquiry in response to concerns from English Heritage. It is expected that the revised application will go to planning committee at the end of the year.

20 Blackfriars Road (behind Christ Church)
Proposal:Residential low rise accommodation to include on site affordable housing, 42-storey residential tower, 23 storey office block and public space.
Developer: Land Securities sold this site to developers Circleplane after the planning application was submitted to Southwark Council.
Architect: Wilkinson Eyre
Current Status: Minor modifications to the scheme are currently being discussed mainly the parking spaces. It is hoped the application will go to the 6th November planning committee

Holland Street (formerly Bankside 4)
Proposal:Mixed-use development comprising 5 buildings ranging from 6 – 24 storeys including retail
Developer:
Clan Grosvenor
Architect: Richard Rogers Partnership
Current Status: Planning permission granted. Work due to start at the beginning of 2008

44 Hopton Street
Current Status: The site is included in the planning permission for Holland Street (above) and will be designed and developed as a Community Open Space.  There will be a public meeting to discuss options for the development of this space to be managed by Tate Modern.  During construction of the Holland Street development it will be used as a site office for construction.

Tate Modern 2
Proposal:12-storey extension to provide new gallery space, education facilities, landscaped square, shops and catering
Architect: Herzog and de Meuron
Current Status: Planning consent granted. Work expected to commence in 2008

Bankside 123
Current Status:
  • IPC Media occupy Bankside 1
  • Royal Bank of Scotland to occupy Bankside 2 and 3
  • Better Bankside have been selected to manage the Community Space in Bankside 3. Feedback to the consultation will take place at the Community Council meeting in November.
  • Public Art: Greyworld’s interactive Monument to the Unknown Artist to be sited on Sumner Street next to Bankside 1. Completion scheduled for November 2007
  • Retail includes a selection of Restaurants and Cafés, Joy Boutique, National Westminster Bank and O’Sullivans Hairdressers
  • The Bankside Health Club will open in January 2008 concessionary rates for residents yet to be confirmed
  • Architecture Foundation HQ: The Project is out to re-tender. Work expected to start the middle of 2008

Work to Rose Court (formerly Pontifex Warehouse), Clink Street is underway
Proposal:Construction of a 6 storey building with retail on the ground floor. Provision of 14 flats with roof terraces above and a new Piazza. Consultation on the use and management of the Piazza to take place early 2008
Programme:
Demolition completed March 2008.Construction time approximately 18 months
