Closure of River Walkway at Blackfriars Bridge
As part of the Thameslink Programme, Network Rail will be closing the river walkway under Blackfriars railway bridge from summer 2008 until completion of works scheduled for completion by the end of 2011.

The Thameslink Programme aims to relieve overcrowding, remove bottlenecks and provide new direct trains into and across London.  The plans for Blackfriars include the redevelopment of  Blackfriars underground and train stations, development of a southern station entrance in Bankside and the extension of the platforms along the length of the bridge, making it the first station to span the Thames.

Ground investigation work starts in January 2008 and will involve localised interruptions to the riverside walkway under Blackfriars Bridge for a three month period.  The works will be mainly carried out at night, although some daytime work will be required.  During these short-term closures of the walkway, a diversion will be put in place along Blackfriars Road, Southwark Street and down Hopton Street.

From summer 2008, the riverside walkway will be closed long-term and the same diversion will be put in place and clearly sign-posted.

Southwark Council and Better Bankside are working with Network Rail to look at public realm improvements along the diversion route.  These may include lighting improvements and the effective usage of the hoardings for sign-posting and interpretation.
