Feast on Southwark Bridge

On Saturday 15th September, Better Bankside took part in the Mayor's Thames Festival flagship event - Feast on the Bridge, a feast held on Southwark Bridge, which, for the first time in history, was closed to traffic for the day.

Better Bankside had an information stand at the main southern entrance to the Feast on the Bridge with a banner promoting Bankside as a 'district of gastronomic delights’, an appropriate slogan for the event. The information stand (and the two representatives) became swamped by interested Londoners and tourists looking for information about the local area, asking for recommendations on where to eat (and avoid the long queues at the Thames Festival stalls - a bit of insider knowledge goes a long way!) and picking up literature on the various attractions in the area.  It was the ideal location to hand out Bankside guides and maps to the numerous visitors entering Feast on the Bridge; approximately 1800 guides were given out in one day.

Thames Festival Topline Figures
  • An estimated 750,000 - 800,000 people came to the Thames Festival
  • One third of the traders involved in Feast on the Bridge came from Bankside – Brindisa, Oysterman (from Borough Market), Konditor & Cook, Tas, Northfield Farm (from Borough Market)
  • There was live music on Southwark Bridge from 1.30pm – 10pm with six live bands playing
  • The Thames Festival website had nearly one million page visits in three days leading up to and over the festival weekend
  • In the week before and over the weekend itself, over 100,000 unique visitors (ie not just someone clicking through again and again) accessed the Thames Festival website – in fact, the site crashed on Saturday 15th for a couple of hours, because of the volume of hits
  • Thames Festival worked with 300 schools and involved over 100 community groups between March and September 2007
  • Thames Festival reached 10,000 young people with their work

Specific statistics for Feast on the Bridge are yet to be released.
