21st May saw the third of Better Bankside's occasional 'Travel Breakfasts', chaired by Better Bankside Chair Donald Hyslop. The venue once again was the Jerwood Space in Union Street.
On this occasion the objectives were to inform participants of the progress of Better Bankside's award-winning Travel Planning programme, to solicit their ideas on further walking and cycling initiatives in the area, and to invite their input into a possible new EU bid.
Around 30 attendees heard short updates from Better Bankside CEO Peter Williams and Business Liaison Manager Giles Semper. Participants then split into four groups to debate a series of questions.
Some of the interesting ideas raised in the group session were as follows:
Supporting Walking & Cycling
Walking
- Branded umbrellas in offices or a 'return/recycle' scheme
- Plea for more paper-based (as opposed to web-based) maps
- More wayfinding and mapping resources on-street
- More guided walks
- Support for closure of Stoney St on market days
- Support for 'safe walking routes', particularly in light of new development
- Walking/cycling information points at key overground stations
Cycling
- Work on safer routes into the area/better infrastructure
- Better signage for cyclists in the area
- Put energy into promoting government tax-free bike purchase scheme
- 20mph speed limit
- 'Bike buddying' a good idea
- Focus cycle offers on buildings rather than companies - e.g. smaller companies are often in large, old buildings without showers etc.
- After work rides
- Bike champions within companies
- More secure cycle storage
Other Transport Concerns
- Wider pavements where possible
- River services need more communication & co-ordination, and cost remains a concern
