Message from Southwark Police

A statement from Malcolm Tillyer - Southwark Borough Commander regarding the recent events.

“As you are all aware, there was a serious terrorist incident in London on Friday and another, linked, on Saturday in Glasgow. They are subject to ‘live’ investigations being conducted by S015, Counter Terrorism Command and therefore, it would be inappropriate for me to comment specifically. However, in light of these events, I urge you to be alert to, not alarmed by, the current threat. There is no specific threat to any part of Southwark.

We, as a nation are subject to a CRITICAL threat level. This means that there is credible intelligence to suggest that an attack is likely. We can only remain at this level for a finite period of time and therefore, we have instigated several tactical Policing Options to bolster security in ‘Better Bankside’ and the whole of Southwark.

Your Safer Neighbourhood’s Team should visit you and they can provide additional information and support.

I urge you to encourage all your staff and visitors to be mindful of their own security and that around them, to report anything suspicious to the Anti-Terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321 and if a person or property are endangered or an immediate response is required to phone 999.

Please also consider the following advice carefully with regards your premises:”
  • Search your premises, inside and out, before, during and after opening hours
  • Remain vigilant during opening hours.
  • Ensure your emergency exits are secured when not in use to prevent any unauthorised entry past any screening regime you have in place
  • Evacuation responsibilities and roles must be clearly communicated to staff, routes and exits must be well defined and evacuation plans exercised regularly
  • Please ensure all staff and customers are evacuated via the safest route to outside the recommended minimum cordons distances. Remain out of the line of vision from any suspect device after exiting any cordoned area
If you operate a CCTV system ensure that the date and time stamps are accurate and the system is registered and well maintained, and any images are retained for at least 31 days."
