New cycle parking in Bankside streets |
|
New 'Sheffield stands' have started to appear in a variety of locations around the area.
Locations for the stands were mapped out by Southwark Council's
Cycling Officer in co-operation with staff from Better Bankside and
environmental agency SEA. The stands have been installed and paid for
by Southwark Council.
The stands are the latest initiative from Better Bankside's Travel
Planning Group (BBTPG), and form part of a much more ambitious
programme.
Said Better Bankside's Giles Semper: 'We have set ourselves some
very ambitious targets in the new Bankside Travel Plan. Among other
things we are trying to increase the number of cycle journeys - both as
part of the commute, and during the day - by 50%, over the next three
years.'
'We know that we need to proceed on a variety of fronts to achieve
this. We plan to look at the movements of people into the area, and
where we are missing opportunities to provide cycle parking and other
facilities.'
So, as well as making sure that there is adequate 'casual' parking on the streets the BBTPG is planning:
- To support the efforts of On Your Bike to establish one of the
first-ever large scale secure indoor parking facilities in London.
- To work with Better Bankside's Environment Group to create 'green oases', combining planting, seating and cycle parking.
- To work with our ranger service and the Safer Southwark Partnership
to establish cycle theft 'blackspots' and determine whether the parking
can be made more secure
- To look at installing temporary cycle parking facilities on future development sites and car parks.
-
–To work with Southwark Council to ensure that adequate cycle parking is part of new developments in the area. It has a target of 50 new public cycle parking spaces in year 07-08. There will be further updates in future ebriefs.
