Proposed Bankside riverwalk cycling ban |
Better Bankside has now hosted two meetings for parties with an interest in the proposed Bankside cycling 'ban'. The meetings were held at the new 'Bankside Community Space' on February 8th and February 15th.
Southwark Council had proposed to introduce a new byelaw - replacing an earlier byelaw with the same effect - to prohibit cycling on the stretch of riverfront known as 'Bank End', stretching from The Anchor pub down to Blackfriars Bridge. This has been opposed by a number of groups, including Southwark Cyclists, Southwark Living Streets and Sustrans. You can read the full story on the Southwark News website.
Better Bankside's position on this issue is that it acknowledges there is a problem with potential conflict between cyclists and pedestrians. It is committed to working with the responsible authorities to develop a solution which is in the best interest of the different users of the space.
The two meetings at Better Bankside have been well attended – by residents, council members/officers, police, and representatives of walking and cycling groups. The last meeting resolved that:
- Southwark Council would progress with Department of Communities and Local Government the confirmation of all the other (twelve) bye laws, excluding the one relating to Bankside.
- Sustrans would design a survey to be carried out on the path over the next couple of months in order to assess the on-the-ground situation and problems.
- Sources of funding (possibly including Better Bankside) would be sought for this survey, and also for possible educational/enforcement materials to be handed to errant cyclists.
- The situation would be observed over coming weeks, particularly at weekends.
- The group would meet again, planned for May, to review the results of the survey.
