Ranger of the Month: Karl Diddams |
A year on and many miles more, Better Bankside’s Rangers continue patrolling the area between 8am and 8pm Monday to Saturday and between 8am and 4pm on Sundays, carrying out a range of tasks. You can read about their duties in the attached leaflet.
In this regular feature, we ask the Rangers a little more about their job and Bankside.
This month we talk to Karl Diddams.
Q: What has been your favourite task?
A: Helping with security at the Bankside Frost Fair. I was assigned to the husky dogs enclave and I enjoyed working in this very buzzy environment.
Q: What has given you most satisfaction?
A: Dealing and helping rough sleepers. We always point them in the right direction for hostels and organisations that can help.
Q: What has been your hardest challenge?
A: When it is quiet on a rainy day, it is often hard to motivate oneself.
Q: Tell me something funny that has happened whilst out on patrol.
A: Someone had stuck a one pound coin to the pavement with super-glue and I tried to pick it up. I got laughed at for looking stupid.
Q: Where in Bankside would you take you girlfriend for a special occasion?
A: If I had a girlfriend, I would take her for a nice meal at Black and Blue and then for a romantic stroll along the riverfront at night.
Q: Give me an insider's tip about Bankside.
A: I'll give you two... Look after your possessions at all times and make sure you have money on you, when walking through Borough Market as you will no doubt be tempted to buy lots of wonderful food.
