This summers work experience cadre is now completing their period of work related learning, close to 2000 students have enjoyed life in the real world of employment and will have learned that there is a huge difference between work and school. Work experience is an essential part of the education of the young people in Southwark, for some students it is the first time they have considered the fact that they may have to leave school in the very near future.
For most students it is the ‘people factors’ that give them the most insight, meeting new people and being exposed to new kinds of working relationships, particularly within a team.
The experience of getting up early and going to a very different situation, being introduced to lots of new faces and definitively not being surrounded by the support networks and friends that are found back at school can be a difficult and demanding situation for some students.
However, with the right kind of work program, structured support and management the students can very quickly begin to make a positive contribution to the work place and develop new skills and attributes.
Being out of school and in the work place can substantially raise the horizons and aspirations of many young people, opening the door to opportunities that they were not previously aware of.
