Better Bankside Community Space
The Community Space will be used as a “Community and Culture Hub” during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. A mix of ‘Volunteers rest and relaxation centre’, ‘Tourist information centre’, ‘Cultural space’ and ‘Community centre’, the space will provide a way for the millions of visitors, volunteers, and workers who will be in the Bankside area for the Games next year to have an accessible and easy Hub where they can go to rest-up, recharge, learn about Bankside, and get better connected to the creativity and cultural offerings in Bankside.
Better Bankside is working with the South Bank and Bankside Cultural Quarter to plan the features of the space. The 8 Better Bankside Events Academy students have also been tasked with a proposal to spend their summer brainstorming, consulting and writing the plan for their idea of the best possible Community and Culture Hub in Bankside. Some of their ideas currently include:
- Olympics volunteers rest and relaxation centre
- Resting point for extra Wardens and Cleaners
- Starting and information point for trails leading into the south of the area
- Cultural activities like mini art exhibitions, community murals, and poetry readings (put on by local cultural organisations)
- TV screen for Olympics coverage
- Cash point, phone booths, bike parking, toilets
- Focus on multicultural foods Recharging for electric wheelchairs, Defibrilator, First Aid point

“We constantly struggle with the
impact of street drinking and rough
sleeping outside our office. It’s great
to know that the Better Bankside
rangers work with other agencies
to deal sympathetically with the
individuals concerned. That’s why we support Better Bankside.”
