Pledge: We will make the area’s railway arches and bridges cleaner and friendlier.
Better Bankside’s pioneering light sculpture at Arch 401 on
Union Street has been replicated by Southwark Council in two more arches – on
Burrell Street and
Dolben Street (Arches 406 & 403). The arch over
Clink Street at Bank End will be further improved in 2007-08.
The company supported the commissioning of ‘Poured Lines’, the artwork that runs the length of the southern wall of the westerly bridge over
Southwark Street. This, along with new lighting and an enhanced cleaning regime, has significantly improved a previously intimidating environment.
Responding to the lack of 'sitting-out places', Better Bankside purchased 300 folding seats and 30 tables in its distinctive corporate ‘pink’. These appear on a daily basis in front of Tate Modern, in the gardens of Southwark Cathedral and in
Cathedral Square on Montague Close, as well as at significant local events. They have also been loaned to member companies.
Working with several key partners, the group has commissioned ‘The Bankside Urban Park’ to identify ways in which the quality of the area’s public realm could be raised over the next three years. It has also consulted on possible solutions to the problems of rubbish dumping and waste removal in the streets around the Borough Market.
Southwark Street remains a key target for improvements in 2007. Better Bankside aims to create green oases outside a number of the businesses, featuring planting in themed containers, new seating and cycle parking.
Throughout the spring, summer and autumn over 20,000 people used the seating provided by Better Bankside. |
