The Travel Planning theme group is new (and therefore does not have a ‘pledge’) but has proved popular with businesses.
In 2006 it completed a major survey of the travel habits of more than 600 local employees. The results informed the Bankside Travel Plan, as well as business-specific travel plans. The group also created a new travel resource for local employees, situated on the Better Bankside website. It includes an interactive map and links to useful sites.
Existing local cycle parking provision was mapped, and fully-subsidised cycle stands were offered for installation on business premises.
A series of ‘healthy travel’ workshops took place in some of the area’s major businesses. An 11-strong group visited the
province of
Gelderland in the
Netherlands, to witness at first hand efforts to make business travel easier, cheaper and more environmentally friendly.
Although the Travel Planning group will no longer be directly funded by the EU’s Optimum 2 programme in 2007, it has an ambitious programme:
- to make Borough High Street and the streets around Borough Market more pedestrian friendly
- to improve the provision of cycle parking throughout the area
- to upskill the Better Bankside Rangers so they are aware of the transport choices available to employees and visitors
- to test the feasibility of a ‘people mover’ service between the tube stations, Borough High Street and Southwark Street
Only 3% of those questioned in the travel survey use a car to get to work on a daily basis. 9% use a bicycle. |
