Rail Arches
Railway arches are a
dominant feature in Bankside and intrinsic to the area's character - but many
are gloomy and uninviting.
"We need a lighting strategy to produce brighter routes, with imaginative lighting of key buildings and public spaces" Such was a public proposal at the Better Bankside Visioning event in 2005.
Since then, Better Bankside has worked in partnership with Southwark Council, Cross River Partnership and other agencies on the strategic programme - Light at the End of the Tunnel. Recent improvements to our railway aches include the blue wash lighting to the arch on Stoney Street - a fitting treatment near to Bar Blue.
Other arches could be treated in similar innovative ways. They would form a visual link from street to street, turning them into interesting, positive features, while making pedestrians feel safer in the area. A strategic approach to the improvement of Bankside's arches would bring significant benefits. Better Bankside is making this a priority.
