Arch 401
Railway arches are a
dominant feature in Bankside
and intrinsic to the area's
character - but many are
gloomy and uninviting.
"We need a lighting strategy to produce brighter routes, with imaginative lighting of key buildings and public spaces" Public proposal at Better Bankside Visioning event
Better Bankside, in partnership with Southwark Council and Bankside Business Partnership, commissioned a unique low maintenance lighting scheme for railway arch 401 on Union Street. Robert Ian Barnes architects, working with artist Ron Haselden, produced a sculpture to illuminate the arch's number, 401, with tiny halogen lights. The switching on event in July 2002 was attended by local MP Simon Hughes.
Feedback
"The 401 light sculpture brightens the railway arch in an unique and attractive manner. It's a positive example of how public art can contribute to regeneration of an area." Donald Hyslop, Chair, Bankside Business Partnership
"The scheme is great – really attractive. One of our actresses was mugged on Southwark Street last year so anything to brighten up the area and make it safer is good." Juliet Alderdice, Manager, Southwark Play-house Theatre.
"I like the installation a lot. It adds to the area and is modern and well-kept with no missing bulbs or anything." Peter Hines, Manager, The Tall House Restaurant
"It's really eye-catching and stands out in the dark. Things like that brighten up the area. I wouldn't mind seeing more public art in the area. It's nice to see such things in your lunch break." Dianne Watts, receptionist, Demica
The Potential
Other arches could be treated in similar innovative ways at minimal expense. They would form a visual link from street to street, turning them into interesting, positive features, while making pedestrians feel safer in the area. A strategic approach to the improvement of Bankside's arches would bring significant benefits. Better Bankside is making this a priority.
