Travel Planning
Take me to the Travel Planning Section now.
The Bankside Travel Plan, one of the first area-wide travel plans in the UK, sets out ambitious targets to increase walking and cycling journeys both as part of the daily commute and during the day.
The Travel Planning theme group is new but has proved popular with businesses. The travel programme continues to prosper and to attract London-wide and national attention. It receives support from other partners, notably Southwark Council, the European Union (through the OPTIMUM2 project) and Transport for London. The programme promoted:
- with other partners, installing some 50 new cycle stands in public areas
- Bikefest, a programme of events offering local employees bike servicing, a folding bike roadshow, advice on bicycle security and guided bike rides. Nearly 90 bikes were serviced
- a programme of guided walks and a new link from the online interactive map and travel tools on the Better Bankside website to the Walk2Go website, which details 50 walking routes in the Bankside area
- promoting travel planning to member businesses, including the Bankside launch of Transport for Londons Enterprise scheme for small and medium-sized enterprises
- support for the idea of closing Stoney Street to traffic when Borough Market is operating.
In 2007 Southwark Council won a Transport for London Sustainable Transport award for its work with the Better Bankside Travel Planning Group.
