Cleaning Team
Pledge: We will wash and sweep the streets to a higher standard, and remove graffiti, fly posting and gum. BB set up its cleaning team in April 2006 when it appointed KGB Cleaning to provide an external cleaning service in the BID. Since that date the team has had a major impact on the appearance of the BID. The cleaning team visits 56 locations each day, six days a week, picking up litter and cigarette butts, removing waste and washing down, cleaning and disinfecting surfaces.
Better Bankside's Rangers monitor cleaning performance daily, scoring each location. The results indicate that the Business Improvement District is substantially free of litter and rubbish, and this was supported by a perception survey we undertook with employers and employees.
To help reduce cigarette litter, we started a pilot scheme involving 20 'Gum & Buttcatchers' being installed to lampposts in Stoney Street and Park Street as well as along the riverside by Southwark Bridge. The Rangers also regularly hand out 'Stubbis' to smokers so they can put out and dispose of cigarettes responsibly.
Better Bankside will extend its cleaning activities and introduce new equipment such as the 'Glutton' street vacuum and a new electric vehicle to deal with the demands of the new spaces and new businesses moving into the area at the beginning of 2008.

“As architects and placemakers we
obviously have a special interest in
the place where we work – both our
own building, its surrounding area
and initiatives like Bankside Urban
Forest. Better Bankside is the best
medium through which individual
voices may act in concert in support
of their community. That’s why we support Better Bankside.”
