Better Bankside ebrief, April 2005 |
British acting's finest visit Bankside's Rose... Are you an aspiring actor?
The party - to which representatives of many Better Bankside businesses were also invited - was hosted by Sir David Bell of the FT, a major backer of the Rose Theatre. It was addressed by Rose Theatre Trust chairman Harvey Sheldon and by another trustee, Shakespeare Birthplace Trust chairman Stanley Wells. The £4m scheme would excavate for the first time the eastern side of the theatre adjacent to the FT and maybe undertake further digging on the section examined in 1989. Fundraising efforts will be funded by the monies given over by the developers of Rose Court, the building which houses the Rose in its basement. Meanwhile the Trust is looking for sponsors of signage, events and publicity. The wooden Rose Theatre was built in 1587 alongside a farm track - now Park Street - on the Bishop of Winchester's estate. Plays by Ben Jonson, Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare were performed on the stage, and Shakespeare is said to have performed in his own right as an actor. Elsewhere in Bankside, Southwark Playhouse has announced its intention to bring alive the vivid, medieval history of Southwark in a promenade performance of The Canterbury Tales. This exciting project will be performed in and around some of Southwark's most historic locations. The Playhouse is looking for a cast of 25 to work alongside its professional actors for two weeks of performances this summer. Applicants can be of all ages and backgrounds, and don't need to have any acting experience. However, they must 1) be 18 or over, 2) live in LB Southwark and 3) be able to attend rehearsals two nights a week and three to four weekends leading up to the performance, and also performances from 28th June to 10th July. If you're interested, go along to the Inigo Jones Studio 1 at Shakespeare's Globe on 23rd April between 5pm and 7pm to find out more. Auditions will be held on 7th & 8th May. For more information call Southwark Playhouse on: 020 7652 2224 or email: admin@southwarkplayhouse.co.uk.
