IBM & Vinopolis praise Better Bankside's 'deep clean'... Early feedback on Better Bankside's power washing campaign has come from
two of the biggest businesses in the area. Justin Morley, Facilities Manager
at Vinopolis, said: '...the improvements we talked about are really having
a positive impact on the surrounding area and we are very much grateful
for Better Bankside's help/support and action. The Stoney Street pathway
looks much better due to its clean and we are extremely pleased with the
new general cleaning teams that are noted in and around the area.' John
Hammell, Facilities Manager at IBM's Sampson House in Hopton Street, said:
'The change is quite dramatic. Tied in with the pruning of the trees,
which should reduce pigeon mess, the quality of the environment has been
enhanced significantly.' The locations are as follows: New Globe Walk - pavement between Shakespeares Globe and Benbow House/Starbucks, including granite setts to centre of carriageway. Shakespeare's Globe Theatre - pavement to north of theatre buildings from New Globe walk to Museum entrance. New Globe Walk (west) - buff-coloured concrete pavers from cobbled entrance to Shakespeares Globe Stage Door to corner of Park Street; to include low level cills to HSBC building. Also along Park Street frontage of HSBC office building to Tate Modern service entrance and footpath. To include red pavers within curtilage of building. Hopton Street and 'Piazza' - frontage of Sampson House to include the clay brick surfaces plus Falcon Point 'piazza'. Clink Street/Bank End - cobbled surfaces from Anchor/Premier Lodge to Clink Museum and footways next to carriageway to include those around Anchor. Red Lion Court - red concrete pavers to walkway from Riverside Walk to Park Street. Stoney Street - west footway from Southwark Street to Clink Street, to include other footway under north bridge. Southwark Cathedral - footway to south of Cathedral from Cathedral Street to London Bridge steps, to include Green Dragon Court and tunnel. Southwark Street - new surface from junction with Southwark Bridge Road to Thrale Street. Southwark Bridge Road - low wall with railings to Financial Times from Southwark Bridge steps to steps down to Park Street, to include main entrance to Financial Times building. Better Bankside's chosen contractor is MDRC Ltd, whose Technical Director Andy Izzard commented: 'We are delighted to have won this contract and to be back working in the area again. We previously worked for Better Bankside about a year ago, power washing and applying anti-fly posting treatment to street furniture - a coating guaranteed for 15 years. Our experience is that power washing makes a dramatic difference to the surfaces to which it is applied. We have no doubt that businesses here will notice the difference.' In addition, Better Bankside will continue to provide a mobile, responsive and flexible cleaning service in the area to complement and support that provided by Southwark Council's Street Cleaning Service. It will target heavily-trafficked areas, footways and carriageways, particularly those where there are concentrations of restaurants, bars and public houses. It focuses on removing smaller items of litter (such as cigarette butts) that are hard to remove. It also clears those spaces that are difficult to access, including enclosed space, planting beds, tree pits and tree protectors. A new innovation for Better Bankside is its network of some 14 contacts
within Business Improvement District companies who will report upon the
standard of cleanliness in their particular 'patch'.
