After an extensive procurement process, Better Bankside has appointed Wilson James to provide a uniformed, patrolling Ranger service in the Better Bankside Business Improvement District. Previously Better Bankside had invested in Southwark Council's warden service.

Wilson James is a major player within the security industry providing, amongst other things, corporate security services to a number of major companies and organisations including British Airways, BBC, Tate Modern & Britain, and Channel 4.

Better Bankside and Wilson James have together appointed four Rangers, three of whom started their induction training on 3rd April. The fourth person is due to join within the next 4 weeks.

The duties of the Rangers service will include:

  • Looking after the local environment, reporting safety hazards, litter, graffiti and flyposters and ensuring that they are removed expeditiously.
  • Monitoring cleanliness and liaising with Better Bankside's cleaning contractors.
  • Meeting businesses and traders in Bankside, listening to their views about doing business in Bankside and developing responses to any concerns.
  • Creating formal & informal networks of businesses to address concerns about safety and security.
  • Keeping a watchful eye on areas around business premises and residential areas and providing advice and guidance on crime prevention and safety issues.
  • Promoting Bankside as a great place to do business, work, visit and live.
  • Meeting, greeting and assisting visitors, by giving directions and å if required å escorting them to places of interest, eateries, transport services and business destinations.

During the first 3 weeks of the service the rangers are getting to know the BID area and meeting with around 20 businesses, as well as residents and essential contacts within the Council, the Metropolitan Police and other statutory services. The Rangers' feedback on these visits will be built into their operating strategy.

The three Rangers currently going through the induction process are:

  • Claire Welton
  • Charles Thompson
  • Karl Diddams
