Prepare for the 'Bankside Urban Park'...

Better Bankside joins other local players to commission a masterplan.

With all the development currently underway or planned how can a comprehensive strategy for improving the public realm in Bankside be conceived and implemented?

There is a shortage of open space and the challenge is to enhance the attractiveness and usefulness of the opportunities that do exist. A sizeable proportion of the BID budget is earmarked for environmental improvement projects and to date although a number of successful projects have been undertaken no overall programme of works has been agreed.

A group made up of Better Bankside, the London Borough of Southwark, Tate Modern, Transport for London, Cross River Partnership and the landowners Land Securities intend to commission consultants to undertake the conceptual, feasibility and preliminary design work, with a target date for completion of August 2006.

This work will assist greatly in identifying a framework for Better Bankside's investment in the public realm and will enhance the prospects of working with others to fund and implement those improvements.
