Better Bankside to test demand for recycling

Did you know the average office worker uses 50 sheets of A4 per day?

Government has announced its aim to get businesses to sharply cut their output of waste. The nearly 2000 landfill sites in England are filling and to dissuade use of this method of disposal landfill tax is planned to more than double to £35 a tonne.

Recycling waste paper from offices can generate between £25 and £125 per tonne.
Three years ago Better Bankside introduced composers into Borough Market with a view to turning organic waste into compost. Subsequently - as reported in the last ebrief - Better Bankside has been hosting an LDA-funded project which aims to offer advice to retailers and those in the catering industry on energy and waste management. Business Eco Group have been working with a number of businesses in Borough High Street on a detailed audit of their current practices and proposing more efficient approaches.

Now Better Bankside would like to begin quantifying the level of interest and potential demand that exists throughout the area for recycling and other services. It will undertake a formal survey of businesses in the coming months.

However if you have strong feelings on this issue, and might wish to help manage the project, please contact Peter Williams on 020 7928 3998, pw@betterbankside.co.uk.
