From Johannesburg to Lant Street - Better Bankside put on a pedestalÉ

June saw BanksideÕs new BID gaining national and international profile.

Executive Director Peter Williams gave a brief presentation to the Borough & Bankside Community Council meeting on 8th June at Charles Dickens school. Community councils are a fairly recent innovation by Southwark Council to involve local people in decision making. The presentation was well received, with questions about decision making on CSR applications, and the effect of the BID levy on small businesses (see http://www.southwark.gov.uk/Uploads/FILE_14599.pdf for minutes).

Better BanksideÕs story was a key focus of a major Business Improvements District conference on June 23rd. BIDs in Practice took place at Savoy Place, was produced by Landor Conferences and sponsored by the Circle Initiative, Central London Partnership and New Start Magazine. It featured high-profile speakers such as Tony Travers of the London School of Economics. Better Bankside Executive Director Peter Williams chaired the morning session and kicked off the afternoon with a paper on ÔTalking to business: putting together a Proposal and programme of serviceÕ. Later in the afternoon, Julian Grice Ð managing director of Southwark Street-based design and branding agency The Team Ð used Better Bankside as a case study in his paper ÔManaging relations with customers: how BIDs should communicate with their member businessesÕ.

Finally, Better Bankside was on the agenda for a recent visit to London by Lael Bethlehem, Director of Economic Development for the City of Johannesburg, accompanied by Michael Owens, director of LondonÕs new Regeneration Centre of Excellence. Lael and Michael visited Bankside to observe the ways in which the area has been regenerated, and to hear how local businesses Ð using the vehicle of the new Business Improvement District Ð hope to contribute to, and benefit from, this regeneration. Johannesburg already has several successful Business Improvement Districts.
