Get your Stubbi’s here… Wardens trial disposable personal ash trays

With smokers banished outdoors, discarded cigarette butts are even more of a problem. Better BanksideÕs Wardens have a creative solution.

Where smokers are in evidence Ð with an accompanying litter problem Ð the Wardens are handing out ÔStubbiÕ personal ash trays. These diminutive plastic pouches are lined with a flame resistant material, allowing the smoker to insert their cigarette while still lit. Once closed, the Stubbi extinguishes and stores the cigarette for subsequent disposal. During May and June, the Wardens gave out several hundred StubbiÕs to businesses such as Ansbacher, Accenture and Financial Times. If you would like a free box of StubbiÕs for your business, please call the Wardens on 020 7357 6511, email betterbanksidewardens@southwark.gov.uk.

The Wardens have been busy with a variety of other initiatives:

- They continue to monitor the Street Population in consultation with other agencies such as the Metropolitan Police, Southwark Council, the Street Population Outreach Team (SPOT), GuyÕs Hospital and the Southwark Anti-Social Behaviour Unit (SASBU).

- They have visited c. 25 businesses in the last month, some receiving crime prevention information.

- They are producing a list of waste hotspots, particularly where residential waste is getting mixed up with commercial waste.

- They have checked several businessesÕ trade waste agreements, pointing out Ð in some cases Ð that businesses are putting out more rubbish bags than their agreements allow, and warning them of the consequences.

- They are talking with young people skateboarding around Falcon Point, advising them not to commit criminal damage.

- They continue to monitor the area outside the Post Office on Borough High Street Ð scene of much anti-social behaviour in the past.

- They monitor graffiti on business premises. Thanks to the WardensÕ presence, and to the quick clean-up of graffiti, this problem is lessening.

- They monitor illegal street trading in front of Tate Modern, reporting to the CouncilÕs four enforcement officers.
