Pink chairs debut at Borough Market Feast
Better Bankside’s new fuschia pink chairs – previewed in the April ebrief ['Take the weight off' courtesy of Better Bankside] have now been delivered. They are designed to offer local office workers a more comfortable experience when enjoying their al fresco lunches. Accompanied by matching tables, the chairs are being deployed on a daily basis by Better Bankside’s cleaning team – quartered at Tate Modern – using the new ‘pink’ vehicle also featured in the April ebrief [Pink vehicle hits the streets] . The chairs are put out at 11am and collected at 3pm, with the Better Bankside Rangers ‘keeping an eye’ on them. They are split almost equally between the open space in Montague Close, the area in front of Tate Modern, and Southwark Cathedral’s South Churchyard. A further 200 chairs and accompanying tables are shortly to be delivered from Better Bankside’s supplier Inova, which sources them from French manufacturer Fermob. Better Bankside Chief Executive Peter Williams commented: ‘Chairs such as these are a feature of several Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) in the USA, although I believe we are the first UK BID to go down this route. In the future we hope to provide occasional entertainment alongside them, as often happens in the US. Our great fear was that users would become too attached to the chairs and would take them home. To date – I’m glad to say – only one has been lost.
