Tate Community Garden - putting the pieces together

Thanks to the Bankside Residents Forum for the following piece from their Spring 2005 newsletter:

The Tate Community Garden is a little known sliver of land tucked between the lawns of the Tate Modern and the wall bordering the Houses on Bankside, the back of the Shakespeare Theatre and the HSBC offices at the corner of Park Street and New Globe Walk.

The concept of a Community Garden, to be located on the grounds of the Tate Modern, was decided more than eight years ago when the then Bankside Power Station was being redeveloped into the Tate Modern. The garden is now finally gaining momentum. In the autumn, the site was cleared and the ground levelled. Last November, more than twenty local residents joined the Bankside Open Spaces Trust (BOST) team to plant a hedge of buckthorn and hawthorn all around the garden. The weather was challenging, but everyone involved put on a good face, and did a very good job, managing to plant more than 150 bare-rooted saplings. The hedge has taken root as can be seen through the fence.

Based on an original by garden designer Lucy Williams, the design has been amended by Peter Graal, community gardens facilitator with BOST, to reduce the amount hard landscaping and increase areas of greenery.

May saw the laying of an adi-grip path which should provide the backbone of the garden, as well as the creation of two mixed borders. More is yet to come. The next stage will involve a mosaic designed by a local resident, Edith Slee. The design is based on a labyrinth theme and will be made using bricks and tiles salvaged from the Thames. Future additions will include a pergola, a pond and stepping stones. It also planned to have a vegetable patch and a wildlife corner... so watch this space!

If you would like to get involved contact Peter Graal at BOST Tel: 020 7261 1009 email: peter@bost.org.uk.

Better Bankside has contributed £750 to the scheme, for the planting of trees.
