The terrorist attacks on London – advice to businesses and residents

As Southwark Council and Police pledge to 'do everything within our power' to offer protection, the Met launches its alert service.

In the wake of the 7th July bombings, Southwark Council and Police have acted to reassure those who live and work in the borough that they are doing everything within their power to offer protection against 'the actions of the few who are intent on criminal or terrorist activity'.

Although they know of no particular theat to places or events, they urge everybody to be vigilant at all times and to report anything suspicious or unusual to the police. The text of the statement can be downloaded here.

Better Bankside is examining the existing security systems which link businesses, to ensure that news of any particular threat is circulated.

'London Prepared' (weblink below) reports that the Metropolitan Police Service has launched a message service for Londoners whereby tailor-made news reports can be texted to your mobile phone. The Police Message Broadcast sends up-to-the minute text messages or emails relevant to your home, your business, or the area of London where your family and friends live. The system allows you to receive news quickly, direct from the police - and you can specify whether you want your bulletins as texts, emails or as recorded phone messages.

You will also be able to report crimes directly to the police, or through a third party, and be alerted if there is an emergency or security alert in your area.

To sign up simply log onto www.police.uk and follow the instructions on the Communities Together page. The system is confidential and free of charge.

Last month the Metropolitan Police Service, along with the Mayor of London's office and Metropolitan Police Association, launched a freephone 24-hour Help & Advice Line to offer support and reassurance to Londoners feeling vulnerable following the terrorist attacks. The freephone number is 0800 028 2390.

A new booklet is now available for businesses, promoting information security and protective security, developed by London First and ACPO, supported by the Security Service. It can be downloaded here.
