Introduction
Bankside is located in one of the most dynamic areas of Central London. There are an estimated 60,000 people working in the area and high levels of development. Ensuring the area remains accessible is key to the vision of making Bankside the best neighbourhood in the world.
Journey to Bankside 2015 is Better Bankside’s strategic response to meeting the accessibility needs of its member businesses. It aims to:
- Determine the strategic direction for Better Bankside’s travel services
- Provide a framework for business specific travel plans
- Set out a vision for work related travel to, from and within Bankside

What are the targets?
Using the results of Employee Travel Survey carried out in 2010-11, Better Bankside has set itself the following targets for the period 2011-2015:
Commuting
- To increase by 50% the proportion of those who commute to work by bicycle (2010: 10% main mode by distance)
- To increase by 100% the proportion of commuting trips made on foot (2010: 5% main mode by distance)
Business related travel
- To increase by 50% the proportion of work related trips made within London on foot (2010: 10%)
- To increase by 100% the proportion of work related trips made within London by bicycle (2010: 4%)

Strategic Objectives
To complement these targets, Better Bankside has set the following strategic objectives:
By 2012
- To establish a robust method for measuring Bankside commuters’ satisfaction with the major public transport interchanges in the area (including London Bridge, Southwark, Borough and Blackfriars and associate major bus stops)
- To develop a set of quality indicators to measure Bankside commuters’ satisfaction with the walking and cycling environment in the Bankside Urban Forest area
By 2015
- To work with Better Bankside members and Transport for London to develop 10 Delivery and Service Plans to reduce freight and delivery trips to and from Bankside
- To establish a system for assessing the availability, quality and location of cycle parking in the area (on street, within workplaces, other secure facilities) as well as to measure rates of demand from Bankside employees and visitors
- To work with the Metropolitan Police and other partners as appropriate to ensure that 90% of all Bankside employee cycles are security marked
How do we measure progress?
The first Bankside Employee Travel Survey was carried out in 2006. The data collected was used by the Travel Planning Group to set targets for commuting and business travel. The second survey collected data in the same way. These means that the results can be directly compared to see if the 2006 target have been met. In between the major Travel Surveys, questions on commuting are included in the annual Bankside Employee Survey.
The figure below demonstrates changes in the commuting habits of area employees between the survey periods.
| Main mode for Commuting |
2006 | 2010 |
| Cycling | 11.5% | 9.95% |
| Walking | 12.5% | 4.71% |
| Train | 27% | 50.86% |
| Tube | 26.5% | 22.63% |
| Bus | 17% | 8.1% |
| Motorcycle | 2% | 1.13% |
| Car Driver | 2% | 2.62% |
| Car Passenger | 0.5% | |
| River | 0.5% |

Growth in Cycling and Walking in Bankside
The survey results show that there has been a real growth in cycling and walking for the commute journey.
- Those living within 5 miles – 23% cycle
- Those living within 2 miles – 50% walk
Given that employees living within these radii demonstate a 50% increase in the walking and cycling mode share since the 2006 survey, the targets of the previous 2006-2010 Master Travel Plan have been achieved.
In the broader London context, the Bankside's commuter cycling rate (9.95% in 2010) is substantially higher than the London average (2.46% in 2009 - from TfL's Travel in London Report 3).
